Nepalese Climate Action - December 6

THE newly formed network based in Kathmandu, Nepalese Youth for Climate Action, are organising two major events to be held in Butwal and Kathmandu.

With the help of local NGOs Clean Energy Nepal (CEN) and Collective Institution for Research and Action (CIRA), many young people have been involved in the organisation of these events.

In Kathmandu, 500 participants will be gathered at a local sports ground to start a Run for Climate.

Joining them will be 50 electric cycles, and local experts and celebrities.

The group will run for up to an hour, through the centre of the city, to finish at the main square.

Here there will be a mass exhibition of mountain photos, many depicting the changes occurring to the environment and the lives of the mountain people as a result of changes in climate.

Also there will be two street drama presentations, young people enacting the effects of climate change on the people of Nepal.

In Butwal, in Rupendehi district in the Western Development Region, CIRA has worked with local development NGOs to hold a workshop and a march.

The workshop will bring together 100 flood affected victims, local leaders, students, experts, and organisers to discuss the cause and affect of climate change, especially in relation to the local people’s livelihoods.

Experiences will be shared, and a discussion will be held about policy, and how local people can really influence the decisions.

A march will be held through the town, with an expected 250 participants.

The organisation of these events has brought together many people, and hopes are high that an ongoing network can be established (under the NYCA) for further research, education, and mobilisation around Nepal.

The Nepalese Youth for Climate Action are recently joined members of the Global Young Greens.
